"Two Sides of Injustice: Why Men Matter, But Women Still Suffer More"

The way crimes against men are increasing in society, men have begun to feel fear — shocking, isn’t it? Just a few incidents of atrocities on men have shaken the entire male community. I believe these events indicate a major shift happening in our society. These events suggest that a section of women is becoming hollow from within, slowly pointing toward a major social crisis.
It seems that the women who took extreme steps either lost self-control, suffered mental deterioration, were pressured by their families to not marry the man of their choice, were victims of domestic abuse, were in love with someone else, had questionable character, or faced issues that, as a male writer, I may not fully understand. But if I give you one statistic, you’ll be shocked.

Women Empowerment and Crimes: A Dual Reality

In India, women are progressing in multiple fields — education, employment, sports, politics, and science. Yet, the bitter truth is that crimes against women continue to rise at an alarming rate. According to the 2022 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), women are still falling prey to domestic violence, rape, molestation, and kidnapping.
Overall Crime Statistics (2022):
Total cases: 4,45,256
Per hour: ~51 women become victims
Per day: ~1,220 cases reported
Key Crime Categories:
Crime Type Cases
Cruelty by husband/in-laws (Section 498A) 1,40,000+
Kidnapping and Abduction of women 85,500+
Assault with intent to outrage modesty 83,000+
Rape (Section 376) 31,516
Other (Stalking, Voyeurism, Dowry Death, POCSO, etc.) ~1,07,000
The highest number of cases are related to mental/physical harassment by husbands or in-laws, which has become a major social and legal challenge.
However, it’s important to note — not all dowry death cases are true. Some women conspire to marry men with the intention of looting their land and money.

Rape Cases: A Major Concern

Most perpetrators are acquaintances friends, lovers, relatives, or neighbors.

Rising Threat: Cyber Crimes Against Women
Women face increasing abuse online — obscene messages, photo morphing, cyber-stalking, and blackmailing. NCRB data shows these crimes are on the rise.

Root Causes of Crimes Against Women:
1. Patriarchal mindset and outdated social norms
2. Suppression of women’s voices
3. Delay in legal processes
4. Lack of education and awareness.
5. Fear of backlash or shame

Steps Toward Solutions:
Legal Awareness: Women should know their rights and file FIRs.
Use of Helplines: 112, 181, 1090
Promotion of POSH and POCSO laws
Training in self-defense and digital safety
Active role of government and NGOs

But What Happens When FIRs Are Not Registered?
Even with serious cases, FIRs are often not filed or delayed, denying victims justice.

1. Vasai (Mumbai): A 26-year-old woman severely beaten by in-laws, but police only filed a non-cognizable (NC) complaint.
2. Uttar Pradesh: In 14 sexual assault cases, many FIRs were not filed or delayed by 40–228 days.
3. Madhya Pradesh – Kajal Case: After gang rape, FIR was filed but police refused to give a copy and threatened her family.
4. Aruna Shanbaug Case (1973): A nurse was assaulted sexually, but FIR recorded only robbery and assault, not rape.
5. Ranchi and Delhi: Multiple sexual harassment incidents were not registered due to low income, police apathy, or bribes.

1. Dr. Moumita Debnath – A Tragic Memory from 2024
Dr. Moumita Debnath, a 31-year-old resident doctor in Chest Medicine at R. G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, was found dead in a seminar hall on the night of August 9, 2024. She was on call after a taxing 36-hour shift .
Autopsy confirmed brutal physical trauma, strangulation, and rape—refuting initial suicide claims .
Evidence of multiple sexual assaults (over 150 ml of semen) pointed to more than one perpetrator .
The primary suspect, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, was arrested; investigations highlighted institutional failure in hospital security and delayed FIR filing.
This tragedy sparked a 42‑day strike by junior doctors, protests, and demands for reforms to protect female healthcare professionals . Dr. Debnath’s senseless death remains a poignant reminder of the dangers women face—even in places meant for healing.

Kolkata Law College Gang‑Rape (June 25, 2025)

Yesterday, a 24-year-old law student from South Calcutta Law College, Kasba, was allegedly gang-raped inside the campus by:
1. Manojit Mishra – a former student leader and contractual staffer linked to TMC student wing.
2. Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) – current students.
3. A security guard, who reportedly ignored the assault inside his own room .
Medical exams revealed forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches—evidence of severe violence .
The case has ignited a fierce political clash:
BJP demanded CM Mamata Banerjee's resignation.
TMC stated police “took immediate action.” They emphasize that 4 suspects have been arrested, and an inquiry is underway
Authorities have seized CCTV footage, mobile phones, and obtained 4-day custody of the main accused. A protest erupted on campus, with deep concerns over campus safety and systemic failures in institutional accountability .

Police & Corruption: The First Barrier to Justice
Though the law (CrPC Section 154) mandates FIR registration upon complaint, reality is grim:
Police Excuse Actual Reason
"We’ll investigate first" Bribe to delay or deny case
"It's a family matter" Collusion with accused
"No evidence" Excuse to avoid FIR
"Woman is lying" Bias and corruption

Recent Examples That Shook Society

1. Lucknow: Woman set herself on fire outside a police station after multiple failed FIR attempts.
2. Jharkhand: Police pressured a survivor into settling instead of registering FIR.
3. Aruna Shanbaug: Rape charge was never included in the FIR a case still haunting justice system.

When Men Become Victims: The Other Side of the Story
Whenever we hear "exploitation," the image of a female victim arises. But today, there are countless cases of men being falsely accused or exploited by women:

False dowry cases
Fake rape accusations
Marriages intended to loot property

Real Cases Where Men Suffered:

1. Delhi: Rape Case Proven False After 5 Years
Woman accused a man of rape in 2015.
Investigation revealed consensual relationship; case filed out of revenge.
Court dismissed the case.

2. Pune: Wife Misused Section 498A
After a few months of marriage, the wife filed cases against husband, in-laws, even 70-year-old grandmother.
Court found the complaint to be false after 3 years of legal battle.

3. Bride Rackets
Women in Rajasthan, Haryana, UP, Gujarat, Maharashtra married multiple men, then disappeared with gold and cash.
One woman married 8 men in a year, looting lakhs each time.

4. #MeToo Misuse
Some women used the movement to falsely accuse men, later admitting it was out of anger or external pressure.

Shocking NCRB Fact
In 498A cases, 80% charge-sheeted, but only 12% convictions.
Implies many cases are false or weak — men suffer socially, mentally, and financially.

Impact on Men: "No One Listens to Male Victims"

Problem Impact
False Cases Suspension, Court battles
Social Defamation Broken marriages, family issues
Mental Stress Depression, even suicide
Legal Fear Fear of forming new relationships

The Way Forward
1. Gender-Neutral Laws: Domestic violence, rape laws must apply equally to all genders.
2. Punishment for False Cases: Legal action against women filing fake complaints.
3. Responsible Media: Media must not vilify men without verification.
4. Support Men’s Rights NGOs: Encourage support systems for male victims.
5. Legal Awareness in Relationships: Self-protection and documentation are essential.
This changing social climate needs balance — where both women and men can live with dignity, protection, and justice.
